Chapter Eight
More tired than she realized, Chelsea overslept the next morning. Clouds hung low and the heaviness of an incoming rain clung to the air as she hustled Max into the van.
When traffic backed up on the freeway, she switched the radio on to a country music station. The next exit was hers. If she got there in a few minutes, she would arrive on time for Maxâs check-up at the doctorâs office.
They were late, but only by a few minutes. Out of sorts, she appreciated the coolness of the air-conditioning in the pediatricianâs office. She liked being punctual. Thatâs all that was wrong.
Liar, her mind screamed. Feelings for Dylan had grown more confusing. She told herself that romanticizing about him amounted to stupidity. He didnât think about her when he wasnât with her the way she did about him. He didnât want to be with her, to hear her voice, to feel the heat churning within him during another kiss. She wanted all that and more.
You have no pride, she berated herself. This man tossed you aside. He chose a woman she would never compare to. Well, maybe with plastic surgery and body molding, she might resemble someone like Lauren. But a person was stuck with their personality. She lacked the effervescence, the quick wit and charm that he wanted in a woman. Repeatedly sheâd warned herself not to make too much of his kisses. They may have been incited by nothing more than curiosity, or some ego trip on his part to see if he could make her swoon.
Oh, but the man sheâd been with yesterday hadnât seemed like that. Helping her, heâd been thoughtful. When talking about his past, heâd been vulnerable. Heâd been the man sheâd seen glimpses of during their brief time together. âMax, I donât know what Iâll do if heâs your daddy.â If he was, she might never see either of them again.
There. That was what this was all about. Max was a part of her soul already. Sheâd known that the moment sheâd held him.
And Dylan? She wanted him to want her so badly that he would feel as if he was going crazy with his need for her. And even as she wanted to spark emotion in him, she wasnât certain she was prepared for the consequences of such an act.
